I’ve always known that I wanted to adopt some day. In fact, my original plan as a choice mom had been to adopt. I kept putting it off, not making plans, until I finally admitted to myself that I also really want to experience pregnancy, so I decided to try to conceive with donor sperm. Given the fact that my tests all indicate diminished fertility, I’ve been thinking I’d try to adopt when it comes time to have baby #2. I've found a lot of blogs about adoption lately, and it’s been discouraging to learn that so many choice moms have had a very hard time trying to adopt, and most seem to recommend fostering to adopt as the best option for a single mom who wants to adopt a child. Which is where my office manager Michelle comes in. She’s been a foster mom for years, the kind of foster mom that any child in the system would be lucky to have, and she keeps track of all her kids, even after they leave her and graduate out of the foster care system. I talked to Michelle once about foster to adopt, which she tried before she had her son, but after talking to her, I decided it was something I’m not capable of doing. (She had a little boy she brought home from the hospital after his birth, but then had to give him up when he was a year old.) So I’ve become more and more discouraged as I realized that I might never be able to have more than one child.
Friday afternoon, Michelle stopped me as I was leaving the office. She told me that she had talked with one of her former foster kids this week, and that his girlfriend is pregnant with their second child. They can barely afford to pay for the things their first child needs, and are in danger of losing their home, so there’s no way they can raise another child. He had called to ask Michelle if she’d be interested in adopting their baby. Michelle and her husband are at the brink of divorce, so she told him she couldn’t give him an answer right away. And then she thought of me.
She asked me if I’d want to adopt this baby.
I was in shock. One second I was thinking about meeting LB and her kids for dinner, and the next I’m being offered what I have only dreamed of – the chance to adopt an infant. So of course I told her yes! I know it’s a long shot. As my mom said today, it has just about as much a chance of happening as it does of not happening. Michelle doesn’t know if the parents would want to give their child to a single mom. She doesn’t know for certain if she wants the baby instead. And it still isn’t a hundred percent positive that the parents will really go through with the selfless plan of giving their child to someone who can give him or her a better life than they can. But just the possibility that it may happen fills me with a sense of hope and joy that I haven’t felt in a very long time. You know how life works sometimes, one minute it’s the same old thing, then you turn a corner and suddenly something fabulous and unexpected is there. It seems that I never manage to turn that corner, most of my friends have, but not me. And now here I am, I’m the one peering around the corner and seeing that something amazing might be waiting.
This wouldn’t change my plans to try to conceive at all. Even if the parents told me on Monday that they want me to take their child, I’d still go through with my planned IUI next month. That means there’s a chance, albeit a small one, that this time next year I might have two children, just 5 or 6 months apart in age. Is that crazy? It makes me wonder if I should tell Michelle no, that I’m not prepared to take that chance, because I’m having a hard time imagining caring for a newborn while being pregnant with another child, much less handling the chaos of two infants at the same time.
*the baby elephant in the picture is one of the many at the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage in Nairobi - this seems like a good post for her.

Wow!! The way this has just sort of fallen into your lap, I think you definitely need to explore it. Things happen for a reason, and having 2 children so close to the same age might be the way this is supposed to work out. Let us know how things are looking. I'll be praying and have my fingers crossed.
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing how life can change in the blink on an eye...take this chance Shannon...it might never come along again! That baby would be so lucky to have you as their mom!
ReplyDeleteThis is so exciting! What a great opportunity for you and for that baby. Something similar happened to me, it didn't work out, obviously, I have no baby. http://theturningofpaige.blogspot.com/2010/02/news-flash-donor-decision-made.html
ReplyDeleteMy advice is to lawyer up. Can't be too careful, legally speaking.
Kinda crazy....my word verification was "dopted". A sign?
I actually teared up reading this, Shannon! Talk about the universe/stars aligning... it sounds like many things need to continue to fall into place, but you are NOT insane to see where this road takes you. You can absolutely do it, no question. Will your life be chaotic with two little ones? Yes. But will your life be filled with everything you've ever hoped and dreamed about? YES!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to hear how Monday goes. All my fingers and toes are crossed for you!
WOW Shannon! That's very exciting! Don't question yourself (I'd jump on that opportunity too). I have no 'words of wisdom; I'm simply supportive and excited to hear how this opportunity plays into your future.
ReplyDeleteHmm, not to be a Debbie Downer, but this almost sounds too good to be true. My advice would be to go forth and do what needs to be done for the adoption, but try to go about it with the idea that it's unlikely to work out. Continue with your insemination plans as though this adoption thing isn't really on the table. I say this as an effort to minimize your stress which affects your fertility. You don't want to get your hopes up and then be devastated if the parents change their minds, and then have that stress affect everything else. If by some miracle you do end up being able to adopt AND you get pregnant, then I would take it as a sign that it was meant to be and things will continue to fall into place the way they should.
ReplyDeleteI think having the two kids so close in age is pretty cool. It won't be like having two infants though. 5 months difference is a big difference in babies. I would think it'd be slightly easier than having twins, which people find a way to deal with all the time.
Excited to hear how things turn out!
Wow! What an oppertunity. Hope they say yes to you as a single mother!
ReplyDeleteWell, it's 100% sure that if you do NOT take the risk then that baby will never be your child. That's the only thing that's 100% in this scenario, but you already know that I am sure. In situations like this the only thing I think you can do is pray about it. If it is God's plan and His will for this child to be yours, then it's going to happen. You are already open to taking the first step which is to even consider the possibility. As with most anything in life, it's really a "God thing" in the end, but I hope it's good news for you.
ReplyDeleteThis is so great! I'd keep all of your options open. You never know what will happen. I'd love to have 2 children close in age.
ReplyDeleteIt is incredible to me how things just sometimes work out! How life seems to hand you these incredible gifts without your even really having to try for them... I know it's a long shot, but what an amazing long shot it would be!!
ReplyDeleteThis is such exciting news! It may be a long shot but it also may be meant to be...how many people have this kind of opportunity presented to them?
ReplyDeleteAs for advice, I'd look at it like this: Even though diving in may end up in disappointment & heartache, would it be worse in the long run to say no then alway wonder about what could have been?
It's a tough decision but the advice by other posters is very good...especially about lawyering up...best of luck, I can't wait to hear more!
I think this would be so wonderful. I agree, not to get your hopes too high because these things can change at any moment, but why not at least try. You could give that child an amazing life. This might be God's plan for you and how crazy that it just came out of the blue. I love it.
ReplyDeleteThat is so exciting! We have friends that have kids that are 4 months apart, they had already agreed to adopt a family members baby and she got pregnant. It's stressful but they love it. Good luck!
