And then the day got worse...

After I posted about my BFN this morning I went upstairs to get ready for the day, but found myself unable to do anything but sit on the floor and stare at the wall.  I didn't cry, I just felt numb.  Then Finn woke up and I got back in the bed, "Give me a hug, Finn, I've had a sad morning."  He wrapped his little arms around me and that's when I cried.  I cried for myself.  And I cried for those who are still trying for Baby #1, who don't have little arms to comfort them.

One of the wonderfully crazy things about TTC is that when a BFN comes along, you have a few minutes to grieve, and then it's time to start looking at the next cycle.  As soon as I got in my car at 8:30, I called my RE and left the following message (after giving all my vital stats), "I'm 12dpIUI and got a negative pregnancy test this morning followed by starting my period, so even though it's early, I'd say this cycle is a bust.  Our plan had been to try 2 IUIs and then regroup, but because of my schedule at the end of November/early December, I was wondering if Dr. M would be ok with me doing one more IUI cycle and then going from there.  If that's ok, then I need my meds called in, thanks!"

I managed to act cheerful at work.  My eyes burned with the need to have a good cry, but I was able to hide it fairly well.  All the messages coming in on my blog helped.  Tremendously.  But by 2:45 I still hadn't heard anything from my RE, so I called again, because their voice mail message clearly says that any calls after 3 won't be returned until the next business day.  I told them I was calling for the second time, and reiterated my same message.  At 4:30 I still hadn't heard back, so I called the front desk, and they got one of the nurses on the phone.  It took her a minute to find my file and then she said, "Oh, we still had 6 people to call back before you.  What can I help you with?"

Really?  First, I called at 8:30.  THAT many women had called before me that at 4:30 there were still 6 ahead of me?  Second, did they not listen to my message at all?

So I again re-explained myself.  She then said, "Well, we have orders for 3 cycles, so we can go ahead and get you set up to come in on Monday.  Do you have a specimen here?"

And of course I didn't.  I had two vials left after Finn, and we'd just used up those two vials.  And that's when it all went to hell.

"Oh, well you can't try this month.  We don't allow anyone to start their cycle if they don't have donor sperm onsite.  It's for your protection.  What if you took all those meds and went to all that expense and then something happened to the specimen and you couldn't get your IUI?"

I couldn't speak, because I was too busy crying.  I shocked myself with the ugly cry on the phone, standing outside, with patients waiting for me in my office.  The one thing that had kept me going all day was the hope of starting meds again next week.  I was shocked and devastated to learn that wasn't going to happen.

I do understand the logic behind their policy.  BUT, how often do you hear of a specimen going bad like that?  Compare that with how often someone gets a BFN and has to start all over again.  If a woman wanted to buy a single specimen at a time (which is more expensive, since the shipping is the same no matter how many vials you buy, but cheaper if you only end up needing one), she'd have to take every other month off.

The RE's office I go to is the best of the two in town as far as success rates.  This isn't based on the self reported data that is posted online, but based on my own informal polling of OBs, other patients and former employees of both clinics.  But today's experience has left me feeling very disappointed in the clinic and the care I received from them.  Disappointed and quite honestly, disgusted.

To make matters worse, I am going to be out of town the 4 day weekend of Thanksgiving, three days the following weekend, and then Thursday-Sunday the weekend after that.  So unless my next period comes exactly 28-30 days from now, I won't be able to try next month, either.

I know that it's not the end of the world.  When TTC, there are always roadblocks along the way, unexpected delays, and it's not uncommon for someone to have to take a month off here or there.  But the two months is what's throwing me.

So decided to try to make the best of it, and in between my tears, I made an appointment with Dr. M for 11/19.  If I have to take a month or two off, at least I can go ahead and meet with him so I can hit the ground running when I can get started again.

In a few days I'll regroup.  I'll be able to look forward.  But right now my head hurts, my heart aches, my eyes burn and I'm just deflated.

  1. Oh Shannon. I'm so sorry. That just sucks.

First, I'm really sorry about the BFN.

Second, that is completely effing ridiculous about the RE's office. Why would you need sperm there before you even start the cyle?

Third, you are a doctor. call in the rx's that you need and start taking them whenever you need. and make an appointment for... saturday? don't explain to the stupid nurse on the phone.

why should they get to decide what you do with YOUR damn ovaries. it's your money, you're the one taking the risk.

okay, sorry. rant over. i'll support whatever you decide to do. but i don't think you should have it decided for you like that.

fwiw, i had to have the sperm there, like, one day before the procedure. my RE's office trusted i wouldn't fuck it up. and if i did, how would that impact them, anyway?

    1. I wish I had just started the Femara on Sunday and show up in the office for my ultrasound on Monday morning, like I had considered doing when I didn't hear back from them. But I wanted to do things the right way, and this is what happens. I know that if I showed up on Monday now (Monday morning scans and labs are done without appointments, you just show up between 7-8:30) they'd tell me I couldn't be seen, because there's now the note on my chart that I don't have a specimen onsite.

The woman who runs the andrology lab is a bit of a Nazi. No one ever has a cycle fuck up because there was something wrong with the sperm. Which is good, expect that it makes them INCREDIBLY inflexible.

  2. Long time reader (and SMC of a 22-month-old girl), delurking to agree with Abby's comment that this is completely unacceptable on the part of the clinic. Upon the instruction of my clinic, I always shipped vials when my period arrived. Do they really think that, in +/- 14 days (enough time to place the order seven times over if necessary!), you and/or FedEx can't be trusted to get the sample there? I would be marching into the clinic first thing tomorrow morning to straighten this out BUT GOOD.

Sorry to be so fired up -- but I totally get how this has crushed you. I would have felt the same. I'll be thinking of you!

    1. It really makes no sense. There's always a nurse there on the weekend, and probably a doctor, but the person who runs the andrology lab has the final say, and she's not there. I have her number, and I know her well. I'm calling her on Monday and letting her know how stupid the rule is. I can't do anything about for this cycle, though. I mean, I guess I could go up there, but (silly, I know) I don't want to do anything to make the nurses mad at me, especially since I doubt it would change anything.. I will be talking to my RE at my appointment, though. He needs to know how much his nurses suck at phone messages.

Thanks for the commiseration. It's nice to hear!

  3. Ahhhh Shannon I'm so sorry. Though I don't understand most of what you're talking about my heart breaks for you. But I know your child is out there waiting for you. He/She just isn't supposed to be born in July 2013. Trust me, pregnancy in July can be a bit, uh, warm.

But you know I know how you feel cause I know you've been following Tate's birth story. That devastation of not even being allowed to try for your dream when some people can't even garner the strength to try, yet you have and it's still out of control. It absolutely sucks.

Cuddle with sweet Finn and try to have a good weekend before Halloween!!

    1. Well shit. If pregnancy in July is warm, then pregnancy in July, August and September is really going to suck. LOL

Out of my control. That's exactly it.

  4. That really is a stupid rule. It's your money, it's your body, it should be your decision. Duh. If you're up for it, and still want to try this month, I think you should try to talk to someone higher up in the clinic and explain that you'll take the risk. But if not, then hang in there, and hope your period shows up on time for once, next month! I hear your frustration, and think it's very justified!

  5. Why can't you speak to them on Monday and then go on Tuesday for a CD4 appointment? My clinic let's you have b/w and u/s between day 2 and 4. You pay good money for these services. You are dealing with reputable sperm banks and put up a stink. They already have a lot of your money. I would be crying too. The months do go by quickly - I can't believe how long I had to wait after my m/c to try again, but I'm already PUPO again...but you are doing IUI and should be able to do one after the other sperm or not. Go to the higher ups...and have day 4 monitoring on Tuesday - you can start the meds off by one day, can't you?

  6. How annoying, I never went to an RE, my OB/GYN performed my three IUIs in her office. I had mine shipped in a two week tank overnight just before I needed it. Then again, they were all unmedicated, and no b/w or u/s were done at any point. Is it possible to have the IUI done somewhere else this cycle? Then again, maybe the timing isn't right and you will be much less stressed/busy a few months from now, thus increasing the likelihood of a successful cycle.

  7. Irate on your behalf. If they are not going to bend on this rule can you take bcp to make your next CD1 fit into your travel plans? I hate writing "I'm sorry" on someone's blog twice in one night. This sucks!

  8. Is it my imagination or do the BFNs get harder each time?

I understand the clinics policy but it's you taking the meds and your money and you should be able to overnight the vial there so it seems like they are being a bit rigid.

Relax and have a glass of wine and know you're in my thoughts.

  9. Oh, my heart dropped for you when I read that you would have to take this month off :( Something I never would have thought of! So sorry!
I would think that they can 2-day or overnight specimens so if you have two weeks (or about that) shouldn't that be enough time?
    I agree, love on Finn
    and This Sucks!!!!

  10. So so sorry to read all this. You know of course that you do have ample time to have Numerous samples shipped overnight (any day next week) before your ovulation day - (Failing that you have more than enough time to find a hot home donor who can accompany you to your insemination!) Surely Dr M can do something for you. If he can't it's because there really is a witch in charge of the lab!! Will say a few big prayers for you! - and do a little voodoo in the Witch

  11. I'm so sorry, Shannon. TTC is GRUELING, and the emotions smack you in the face when you least expect it. Delays, in particular, are the WORST! In case it makes you feel better, when I found out I had polyps and would have to delay two months for a minor surgery, I stayed home from work and cried for TWO DAYS. Seriously. Two full days. It feels silly now, looking back, but at the time it was what I needed to do. It will get better, but in the meantime, if you need to have a good cry or two (or two days)... that's just fine. Cry away!

  12. I'm so sorry about all of this. I was hoping next month would be your lucky month and your second baby would have a birthday near D's birthday. I hope you can work something out with the clinic so you won't have to delay that long. But I have to agree with the comment above about being pregnant during the summer. I was MISERABLE and constantly covered in sweat during my third trimester. I'm talking sweat dripping down my face and arms ALL.THE.TIME. Even when I was sitting in an ice-cold room with a fan blowing on me! Of course it was all worth it, but I can't say I would recommend it. LOL. Anyway, sending you and Finn lots of good thoughts and hugs!

  13. I'm so very sorry for this double-wham of bad news :( Abiding with you as you decide what to do moving forward.

  14. Why does it seem that some RE offices have rules to actually make it more difficult for us to try to get pregnant? It sucks and I am sorry that you have to deal with it.

  15. I'm so sorry you're being delayed. So frustrating & seems unfair. Thinking of you

  16. How disappointing :( I have done alot of IUI's, and just switched to IVF. I just wanted to share if you are thinking of doing IVF at all, then you should talk to your RE about it at your November appointment. I learned the process to start IVF is longer than IUI, due to things like medication you may need to start well before AF starts for your IVF cycle, the clinic may only have scheduled dates for IVF patients (meaning you follow their schedule, not your own natural cycle), etc. After my IVF dicussion with my RE, it took almost 2 months to actually start my IVF meds due to all of this. A long story to tell you that if you decide in your mind now to start IVF, it may take lead time and you can start all of that now while you are still traveling over the holidays. Hope that puts you at ease, somewhat...

  17. I am so sorry that you are facing these delays due to what seems like a very stupid policy with the fact that there is the ability to ship overnight. Could you put in a call to your dr to see if that is truly his policy? He may not realize what his nurse is doing. I am thinking of you & wishing you the best!!! We are delayed right now too with our move & finding a new dr. You are not alone!!! I am not sure if that helps but I thought I would let you know!! Hugs!!!

  18. Okay...I agree, that is the dumbest policy ever. I shipped specimens MANY times a couple days before my IUI (and actually many smaller offices don't want you having extra specimens around because they take up tank space!!).

I'll also second the suggestion that you take BCP to monkey with the start of your cycle. It's what I did to get around Thanksgiving (and to schedule a hysteroscopy) for my penultimate IUI.

    I'm sorry.

    I'm just sorry.

  19. Woke up this morning and I was still thinking about you. Have you thought of popping some femera at home - and then having the sperm shipped to your house (you will have to get another doc sign off on this if course - because its another thing the Witch in charge of your lab does not allow). Then you could do an insemination at home - or have a friend / nurse do it for you. You could also have your insemination done the next cycle at an office near your Thanksgiving vacation. Sometimes clinics do this for each other (it does get difficult if your visit is out of the US) - but I looked into this, and it seemed possible!

  20. Sorry about your bad day, I am glad Finn was there to make you feel a bit better.
That specimen thing sounds ridiculous to me. My husband always provided the sample the day of so what's the big deal.

  21. This just sucks. I'm so, so sorry about the REs office too. Thinking of you so much right now and loving that Finn is there to give you hugs.

  22. Ugh, sorry. I remember my clinic had some utterly maddening policies (no ultrasounds on weekends; if you couldn't make your Day 10 u/s the whole cycle was shot). I know dealing with women with fertility needs can be challenging but they really should be more accommodating, you know?

  23. I'm so sorry about the BFN and now the waiting part before you can get things moving again. It's so tough when things are out of your control. I know our stories are different and I'd never say I understand how you feel, but I clearly remember the frustration of having an IUI canceled -- simply because it was supposed to happen the day after New Year's and no doctors would be available. I had already taken the meds and even the trigger shot. (Since when is January 2 a big holiday?!) Infuriating.
Anyway, just want to tell you I'm sorry and I'm thinking of you. Really hoping you'll have another baby on the way soon. Sending lots of hugs until then... although they're not nearly as sweet as Finn's. :)
