| Finn and Vagus |
I don't exactly feel depressed - I'm actually feeling pretty optimistic and cheerful these days. But the slightest thing can set me into tears right now. Finn giving me an especially cheeky grin. A patient telling me a sad story. A friend sharing lovely details about a new relationship. Fiona telling Levi he'd always be a part of their family as they said goodbye to their dear friend this week. The sight of the last 6 bags of frozen breast milk sitting forlornly at the bottom of my freezer. All of these and more have made my cry the past few days. It's starting to get a little ridiculous.
Finn hasn't nursed since last Saturday, the 16th. When I bring him to bed he no longer takes his pacifier out of his mouth so he can start rooting around, and so my heart hurts just a little bit less every day. Amazingly enough, he hasn't even wanted a bottle at all when he's woken up the past 5-6 nights. He has regressed a little with sleeping in the crib, though. Saturday and Sunday he woke before midnight and wanted to come to bed. Tonight he woke up after being in the crib less than 20 minutes and screamed until I put him in my bed, and then he went right to sleep. This after sleeping in his crib from 9pm to 6:30am on Friday night (and then sleeping from 6:45 until 10:45 on Saturday morning!) Walking him to sleep is continuing to be a huge success, and I'm loving the exercise.

But back to weaning - I'm so lopsided these days. My right side is back down to pre-pregnancy size, but the left one (Finn's favorite) is lumpy and tender and big. It's not engorged - it's more like I have a couple of clogged ducts that need to go down, though I bet a good nursing session from Finn would take care of it. I've read that peppermint is good for decreasing milk supply, so I'm going through Altoids like crazy, and considering starting sage tea, which is also supposed to be good for decreasing supply. Ice has helped the tenderness to the point that it's now only tender when I press on it, so I've been avoiding pressing on it. I'm really curious to see if I can still express milk, but I'm trying to avoid it, so that I'm giving my body any signals to make more milk.
I did discover that wearing white pants with a 13 month old does not do anything to attract AF. All it does is attract dirt.

I had a hard time giving up bf'ing as well and was very weepy and sad too. It's a deep form of connection. I'm thinking of you! Thanks for your words and thoughts on my blog too. xoxo
ReplyDeleteLove the picture of Finn and Vargus. Annelise prefers the left boob too. So much so she was refusing the right for awhile. I was very lopsided.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a doctor (but you are!!!) and it would seem to make complete sense from a hormonal standpoint that weaning would cause depression, not to mention the psychological factors involved.
ReplyDeleteI think I'd try to express enough milk to work those clogged ducts out before you do end up with mastitis again. You will probably be able to do so for a LONG time...I know a mom who relactated (?) with a preschooler who had been weaned for about a year prior.
I'm sorry he's struggling with the crib transition. LG was two steps forward one step back with the crib, too.
I'm not a doctor or a mother so once again I have no expertise to offer. I can make you an exquisite pair of shoes tho. ;) I love that picture of Finn doodle and Vagus. My favorite in awhile. I'm sorry you're weepy, but it all makes perfect sense to me. Big hugs and xoxo to my favorite doodle.

Hahaha, white pants! Do you know how many of my friends had their first period while wearing white pants? I was wearing white jean shorts myself! Good luck on finding AF soon.
ReplyDeleteThat is a big cat!! :) Sounds like Finn knows what he likes...Mama's bed! Smart man...
ReplyDeleteWhen I briefly tried to stop my milk at 5 weeks - I got insanely sad - that was one of the reasons I decided to give milking one more try! I am sincerely hoping that when my baby is ready to stop - it won't be so bad!
ReplyDeleteI had a horrible time emotionally while weaning Elena. I felt so out of control, irrational & over reacted to everything & it's taken about 6-8 weeks for me to feel "normal" again.
ReplyDeleteToo funny about the white pants! Try going to a public pool without any "supplies" that's when AF surprised me as a teenager!
Ugh! What if you normally can cry at the drop of a hat, yipes ;) Sorry you're having to go through all of this, and hopefully you'll have to look forward to enduring it again. So great that he loves to read, and who doesn't like different voices and sound effects?!Wonder what else you could do to tease AF into dropping by for a visit ;)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great pic of Finn and Vagus Shan and lol on the altoids! Love that Finn loves to read with you! Enjoy your posts as always!
