41

I hate that song by Five for Fighting, "100 Years to Live."  It depresses me every single time I hear it.  Getting older has always bothered me.  Not the idea of getting older, not the wrinkles or the grey hair (well, not too much), but just the idea of time passing so quickly, and knowing that certain eras of my life are over.

I still vividly remember the feeling of being 5.  I can remember little snippets - the joy of riding my Big Wheels as fast as I could down the sidewalk.  Singing along to "Free to be You and Me" at the top of my lungs.  The excitement of a visit from Santa Claus, which was only rivaled by my excitement at a visit from my grandparents. While the details are fuzzy, it almost feels like it was just yesterday, when I think about how it felt to be 5.

I remember an Easter when I was in junior high, an Easter where my mom didn't even pretend to have the Easter Bunny come visit.  I cried, and when my dad asked me what was wrong, I said, "I don't want to grow up.  I still want the Easter Bunny to visit."

High school was torture for me, and my theme song at the end of senior year was REM "It's the end of the world as we know it (and I feel fine)" - very uncharacteristic of me, but it was a nice break from the emotional mess I usually am at these sorts of moments.

My twenties were a blur of finishing college, applying to medical school (twice) and then med school and residency.  My thirtieth birthday came and went with little fanfare, other than my first grey hairs. Then suddenly I turned 40.  A lot happened in the those 10 years, but it still seemed as though they went so fast. I was talking to a patient today, and we were discussing something I vividly remember. I went back through her chart, and was shocked to see that this event had happened 5 years ago.

The passage of time sometimes makes my heart hurt.  There are so many things that I miss because I'm too busy to notice them.

That passage is even more evident now that Finn is here.  I see little babies now and find it hard to believe that Finn was ever that small, that helpless.  And yet this time last year, he was.  And this time next year he'll be talking and walking - and I'll find it hard to remember the days before he could do either.  It's not that I don't want him to grow up, it's just that I want it to pass a little more slowly.  I want to have time to savor these days with him, instead of rushing through them on the way to the weekend.

I'm forty five for a moment

The sea is high
And I'm heading into a crisis
Chasing the years of my life

This whole song makes me sad - as encompasses an entire life in a few short lines.  "Chasing the years of my life."  Doesn't that just make you melancholy?  I'd be happy if I never heard this song again, even if it is actually really pretty.  But the line, "100 years to live" - really?  When Finn is my age, I'll be 81.  I really truly hope I'm lucky enough to have 100 years to live.  I'd love to see him grown and mature into his 50s...

Today's depressing post has been brought to you by the number 41 for the number of years I've been alive, as of today.  And it has actually been a really nice day, even if I forgot to hang out the birthday flag, and Finn didn't give me a birthday present - he's present enough, I think.  I'm not sure where the  downer mood came from, maybe a crash from the sugar rushes of the day, thanks to donuts and cake and more cake.

To end this on a high note, here's my brilliant son at play.  He's so funny these days, I just love him:

  1. I love the video! I literally laughed loudly. I love his arms waiving and searching for the ground. He's so sweet.
I still feel like I'm 10 years old, riding my bike to town to buy candy. There's just no way I'm a 38 year old adult with a station wagon and a mortgage.

  2. Well HAPPY BIRTHDAY to you too!!! It seems to be a popular date to be born! I don't know about you, but June 4th always has beautiful weather where I live (which is odd because our weather changes very quickly this time of year).

Absolutely love the video of Finn, what a character! I bet he keeps you laughing all the time, so cute!

  4. Oh Shannon! Happy Birthday!! I'm right there with you as my B-day is in couple days and I don't know if I should laugh or cry half the time. I'm opting to stay home and stay under the covers. I find how quick the years go just dizzying. And slightly terrifying.

  10. I never minded getting older. I try to find the changes just as exciting rather than missing what used to be. Yes, Laura is no longer little, but she can use the bathroom by herself and sleep 8 hours in a row. It is sad that she doesn't always want me to read with her because she wants to try on her own, but it's so magical seeing her embracing reading. I also think it's easy to see the past a bit rosier than it was. So, I try to see my present and future rosier to even the score.

As for the Easter Bunny, I still get presents from the Easter Bunny and Santa. I never said I didn't believe, and they keep showing up when I'm with my parents for the holidays. To be honest, sometimes I forget I am the Easter Bunny. I swear the baskets were almost empty this year until I ran out the weekend before and bought out Bed Bath and Beyond.

As my dad says about growing older, it's better than the alternative.

  11. Happy Birthday! I remember there was a period of time when every birthday brought some kind of milestone (16 driving, 17 R movies, 18 voting, etc). It was definitely a let-down when we passed that phase. Also a big let-down when people stopped throwing birthday parties for me. But it sounds like you were able to celebrate a little bit anyway, and I'm glad you had a nice day despite the depressing part.

  13. Happy birthday! I hope you and Finn had a wonderful day! It's funny how you were calculating where he'd be when you were a certain age. I do that all the time. Finn is hilarious. Thank you for the laughs!

  14. Happy Birthday!! And yes, time passes WAY too fast for my taste. thought there are some moments (When Elsie is pitching a fit) that I wish would pass a little faster. :)

A freind told me that the hours creep and the years fly by and with Elsie I find that VERY true!

  16. First of all, I have to apologize to your favorite Dave Matthews because I thought he sang this song, and like you, I find it depressing. Although, I think it's supposed to be a little uplifting in that "there's still time for you.". But whatever, depressing it still is. Lol.

Happy birthday! Love that bucket head boy!

  19. Happy Birthday (even if they are not as fun when you're an adult--it's still something to celebrate!) Yes, that song makes me want to cry. It's beautiful but all too true. It's impossible to make time stand still but could it just slow down? A little?

  20. Happy Birthday, Shannon! I'm not too excited about getting older either... the only consolation seems to be the wisdom that comes with it. Not much of a consolation, I know.

And just when I thought Finn couldn't get any cuter, the bucket boy makes his debut!

  21. Happy birthday. I think you summed up my feelings exactly. I think we must find a perfect way of remembering time or just stop thinking about it. I heard a quote that was pretty profound to me 'the days are long but the years are short'. I think it says it all.

  22. Happy Birthday Shannon! I'm right behind you (41 in August) and I'd guess it's normal to have these thoughts -- maybe a mini midlife crisis - not that being normal makes it fun or easy. I have times when I think "well Shit, I'm not going to get married in my lifetime, am I?!" or realize how old I am and still buried in school loans and struggling financially and realizing I'm going to have to work until I'm 80. But those thoughts make me sad so then I just look at my babies, like you're doing with this AWESOME bucket video, and realize we have it pretty good.

  23. I hate that song too as well as being shocked at the passage of time. It's all gone so fast and I wonder every day how my life got here. Happy Birthday, belatedly.

  24. From one 41 year old to another, Happy Belated Birthday! The video of Finn is too precious! I love how he had that one left arm going every time the bucket was on the head and he was on the move. Thank you for sharing.

  25. Happy Happy Belated Birthday Shannon! You have put into words beautifully exactly how I feel about the passage of time in my life and Tate's life. And you're so right...we're so busy 'doing' that we forget to live our lives. It reminds me of a bi-plane ride I took about 8 years ago...the pilot told me to leave my camera on the ground and simply 'be' in the experience. He said I would remember it better if I simply experienced it instead of trying to document it. Truer words were never spoken. I've never forgotten the thrill of being upside down or the lovely views. I need to remember to be in the experience that is my life. I hope you celebrate your life today, tomorrow and always!

  26. Happy Birthday!!! So glad to "know" you through your blog! Here's to another beautiful year! (and yes, time passes too fast and makes my heart hurt to think of it too)

  27. Happy Birthday!!! (a little late) I tried to leave a comment that day but had trouble. No, you're definitely not alone in hating that song. I think it's written for 20 year olds maybe. Anyway, you're fabulous at 41! Love love love the bucket video - soooo cute.

  28. Happy Belated Birthday. I read this post the other day on my phone and it has stuck with me (also got the song stuck in my head), just wanted to say I loved it and it really resonated with me as I just hit 40 today. That song has always made me a little sad and like I want to scream "stop, slow down!" Great Post.

  30. Happy Belated Birthday! Finn is SO adorable in the video (and always!)! I love that he keeps putting the bucket back on his head and waving his chubby little arms around! So cute!

Time really DOES pass so quickly. My pregnancy has absolutely FLOWN by, although of course the tough times didn't feel like they were happening so fast in the moment! I just know time will continue to fly once my little one arrives. I'm hoping I can at least slow it down enough that I'll remember it...

  31. Well Happy Birthday, even if I am a little late.

Although I can echo many of your feelings, (I will be 41 later this year too) I am actually loving my 40's so far. It feels like everything is now as to should be, that my life has finally come together. I have never been happier.

I hope this year brings lots of wonderful things for you

And I love the bucket video!
