Bedtime Routines

Since I went back to work, Zachary has been doing most of the bedtime routine with us and it was working well.  But this past week, Zachary has become increasingly fussy as the night wore on - clearly, he needed an earlier bedtime.  So for the past few nights, Finn and I have gone upstairs a little early, and Finn has played or looked at books while I nurse Zachary and get him to sleep.  It's not easy for Finn to be quiet, so it probably takes a little longer than it should, but I'm gradually getting Zachary back to being able to fall asleep on his own (he lost this skill when his teeth started to come in), and then Finn and I have some good one on one time after Zachary is asleep.

Tonight, Zachary nursed for much longer than usual and Finn got bored.  First he had to go to the bathroom (which he is completely capable of handling on his own).  Then he decided to go ahead and take all of his clothes off.  Just as I was leaving the room, Finn walked back in.  "Mommy," he whispered, "There's pee-pee dripping everywhere."  "Uh-oh," I said as I walked to the bathroom.  "No, Mommy, not in there!"

He led me into his room.  "My airplanes were hungry, so I fed them." His airplanes were hungry?  I was confused, until he held up his two wooden planes for me to investigate. The noses of both planes were damp.  And there were lots of little wet spots on the floor.

"Sweetie, airplanes don't eat pee-pee."
"But they're hungry.  What are they going to eat?"
"They eat pretend food.  But nobody eats pee-pee."

It was so unexpected, I couldn't even be mad.  I did have to ask him what he was thinking when he did it.  "I was thinking they were hungry. And then I was thinking 'this is a bad idea.'"

He helped me clean up, and promised he would never pee on the floor again.  Or on his toys.

And now for this week of Zachary pictures:

  4. Too funny! As a teacher, I have to admit that Finn has the personality traits that all of my favorite students always have ( a tiny bit sneaky/naughty, and a whole ton of curious/cute/funny)!

  7. OMG I totally laughed at loud. At your expense, yes. I'm so sorry. Kinda. But it really was funny!!

You really have too incredibly gorgeous little boys. (There, has that made up for my laughing at the bedtime story?? Ha - just realized this gives "bedtime story" a whole new definition!)

  11. "I was thinking they were hungry. And then I was thinking 'this is a bad idea.'" -- made me laugh! Your boys are both so beautiful! M wasn't able to go in grocery carts until she got her brace off during the day, and now shopping is sooo much easier.

  12. Too funny - Foxie peed on the deck and then had a fit when I wouldn't let him drive his cars through it. Sounds like you handled it better than me.

  13. Finding a bedtime routine has been one of my biggest challenges. What works best for us is putting SR to bed first - J-Bear plays in SR's room and sometimes comes to listen to the books we are reading. SR goes to sleep, and then I read with J-Bear and nurse him. Whenever I try to put J down first, SR ends up WAY too late as we wait for J to settle. I hope Z continues to go down easily to give you and F some time together. Finn has wonderful explanations! How could you possibly be mad - the planes were hungry! Love it!

  15. Oh, my! They are just so precious! And pee-pee for the hungry planes makes perfect sense to me! ;)

  16. I've been solo parenting for a week and bedtime is the hardest time of the day. And every night this past week, I've thought of you - and I've wondered how you do it EVERY.SINGLE.DAY by yourself. You are amazing! I can handle the day-to-day when flying solo, and yes, I can HANDLE bedtime - but it is hard work. It is exhausting. Once everyone's in bed, I just want to fall into my own bed and turn out the lights.

Finn has a wild imagination! That's a good thing, until his airplanes are hungry. HA HA!

  17. I'm seeing it from a different angle. You were feeding Zachary with something from your body and he wanted to do the same for his planes. Makes sense to me (even if he is wise enough to know better, he was being kind). :)
