| Sound Asleep - too bad it wasn't at 3am |
I'm a little brain dead from lack of sleep at the moment, so I thought I'd take care of a few questions from my last couple of posts.
First, I was asked if I named Finn after the character on Glee. The answer to that is no. In fact, I'd picked out Finn as my only choice for a boy, and Quinn as a possible name for a girl years ago. And then Glee comes out, and there's a Finn and a Quinn! What are the chances?
Second, I had a few requests to post the list of instructions for postpartum care providers from Alex, my doula (created by Alex, Heidi and Jamie), so here it is:
1. New MOTHER should have plenty of bonding time / alone time with BABY. Let
them have it. Care-takers will have time to hold the baby during Mother’s naps and
showers.
2. Mother should ABSOLUTELY NOT EXERCISE for 6 (six) weeks. Please enforce this!
(No matter how much she wants to exercise)
3. Mother needs to stay hydrated. Make sure she always has water.
4. Mother needs to consume calories for breast-feeding. Keep her well fed.
5. Please do not carry BABY up and down the stairs. Mother will do this.
6. Please wash hands before handling BABY.
7. Alcohol and BABY don’t mix: please stay away from him if you’ve been drinking.
8. Please consume hot liquids (coffee/tea/other) in a room separate from BABY
9. If you have a cold, please stay away from BABY.
10. If there are visitors, encourage them to leave sooner rather than later. Unless they’re
doing housework. :)
Third, I'm finally starting to feel better after my c-section. It's still difficult to sit up in bed, but easier. I can NOT imagine what those women are thinking, though, when they schedule an elective c-section because it's easier. I still can't pick up the baby carrier with Finn in it, and I've yet to feel good enough to get back to a regular walking routine. But soon, I can tell!

LOVE those cheeks! I also love the list for postpartum care, and thanks for sharing it with us :)
ReplyDeleteAnd I just re-read the post--I had thought it said it was 3 am -5 am originally. Oh you poor things it's actually 14 hours not the two my brain originally read. I hope the "moments" phase passes quickly so you can more enjoy his newborn stage.
Finn is gorgeous!!! Most of the stuff on the postpartum care seems like basic common sense, but people do have a tendency to forget that. :-( I hope you start getting some real sleep soon. Take care of yourself the best you can! Finn needs his mommy healthy.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds as though you are not having an entirely easy time - but Finn is So adorable - I really do look forward to meeting him!
ReplyDeleteI'm impressed you have been blogging with that kind of schedule! I hope you are managing to get some sleep when you can and are leaving all non-essential housework etc for another day? I hope this phase passes quickly.
ReplyDeleteI always scratch my head when people talk about "too posh to push" elective caesars...having assisted in many c-sections myself, I wouldn't choose that option if it wasn't necessary for a healthy baby!
My donor's son is named Finn, so it's not an option for me, but I love it. Take care of yourself Shannon xx
Yeah...I totally don't get the elective c-section either. My OB told me point blank that VBAC would be easier recovery than another c-section. One's major surgery...one is a painful thing that our bodies are designed to do. Seems like a no-brainer to me. It took me a couple years, honestly, to get complete abdominal strength back after LG's birth.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting the pics; Finn's adorable.
Glad to hear you're feeling better.
ReplyDeleteJett was a ball of fun from 6pm to 1AM when he was a bit younger. It's gets shorter and shorter and better and better.
Love the new photos of Finn! Those pudgy baby cheeks are always the cutest thing.
ReplyDeleteI don't get the purposefully choosing a c-section if it isn't necessary. My sister is having to go through c/s #2 in a couple weeks and hers were both necessary for physical reasons. It is major surgery and I think too many people have become complacent about that.
I do hope that Finn starts adjusting so you can get a little more sleep. Sleep deprived states are never fun and I can only imagine how frustrating it would be when your little one is being fussy on top of it.
Look at those little lips. Adorable. A friend of mine name his son Finn about a year ago. I think it's a name that is gaining popularity and not necessarily because of Glee.
ReplyDeleteI love the name Finn. It was actually on my list as I love Irish names but I wanted something more uncommon as we have a very common last name. But LOVE the name..and the babe. He's so freaking cute. :)
ReplyDeleteYou're doing a great job, mom. Keep up the good work.
Such a sweet face Shannon!
ReplyDeleteFinn is such a handsome boy! Hoping he starts to figure out the day/night thing soon. You're doing such a fantastic job - that's evident in the super content look on his face :)
ReplyDeleteExtra special thanks for posting the postpartum guidelines for those caring for someone who has just had a baby. (you are so exhausted but still manage to find time to post, comment, and do this list!)
I'm copying and printing this out for my mom and sister.
So adorable. Glad you're starting to feel better.
ReplyDeleteThe cheeks are GREAT!!
ReplyDeleteFinn is just precious! You are so right that caring for newborns is not for sissies. Have faith, sleep will come. Before you know it Finn will sleep for longer stretches.
ReplyDeleteYour list should be published!!! Perfect advice
Hope you are feeling stronger everyday.
