What I'm Afraid Of

Some of the comments on my last post got me to thinking.  Specifically, thinking about how I’d been a little misleading in my fear of “giving in” to an epidural – and that led me to think about what I’m really afraid of as I head into the last 3 weeks (or so) of pregnancy.

My Fears

  • I’ll be a crazy, whiny, annoying, screaming and crying woman the entire time I’m in labor – I really don’t want to be one of those women who all the nurses hate and who is an absolute pain in the ass because I’m so awful.
  • I’ll end up getting an epidural and because of that I’ll get one of my horrible headaches.  Or that the hormonal changes after pregnancy will give me a headache.  Either way, that one of my occasional, horrible, nearly incapacitating headaches will show up around the time of delivery and I’ll spend the first few days with my baby boy, miserable and barely able to function because my head hurts so much.
  • My biggest fear is that Something Bad will happen.

My doula (Alex) and I discussed my fears today, and we’re both pretty sure that I’m not going to turn into one of Those Women, though I might temporarily resemble that woman during transition.  As far as my headaches go, one of the big triggers –aside from hormonal changes - is clenching my jaw and tensing up my neck and shoulders, so she’s going to make sure I avoid doing that as much as possible.  And for the last fear – well, I think every pregnant woman has it.  I know the chances are small, and I’m just going to focus on the fact that I’ve had a normal pregnancy so far, and that means that most likely I’ll have a normal delivery, too.

So I’m still nervous, but I’m not sure I’d say I’m actually overly worried or frightened.  And, while I really hope I don’t get an epidural, I’m ok with it if I end up getting one.  Reasons why I think I’d get one would be if labor dragged on, and I was just exhausted and had to have some rest, or if I needed Pitocin.  If the Pitocin is required, then so is an epidural!

Alex also pointed out that as of tomorrow, I’ll be 37 weeks, also known as full term.
Which means I need to get things ready, as he really could come at any time now!  My hospital bag is now packed - minus Chiquitito’s going home outfit, which is in the dryer right now.  (I just did my first load of baby clothes – first of many, I know, but still exciting to be the first!)  I actually have two bags – one with my clothes and toiletries, and another to hold my camera and computer.   I had thought to keep at least the one with my clothes in the car, but now I’m thinking I might just keep them in the house.  Even if I go into labor at work (which is just across the street from the hospital), I’ll probably still go home first (20 minutes from the hospital), because I really don’t want to go to the hospital the second labor starts.

Realistically speaking, I’ll probably go to into labor in the middle of the night.  And when I do go into labor, it’ll be after I’m already off work (I’ve got patients scheduled up to April 29 – the Friday before my due date), since most women deliver their first babies after their due date.

But then again, the next full moon is April 17…..

  1. Wow! Getting close! The important thing is not whether you turn into one of Those Women. Instead it is you and the baby coming out of it all healthy. You'll definitely be in my thoughts and prayers. Love, Nell

  2. You are getting up there now! You seem so serenely calm, that I think you're going to have a wonderful labor experience. Your Doula sounds really on top of managing your labor and helping you.

  3. I think you seem like you're in a wonderful place, and I don't think you'll be one of those women. I went into labor a week to two weeks early. I never track my period so it was always a guestimate. Plus, Laura measured big and it was always hard to tell exactly.

Car seat all installed? I only ask because I forgot the car seat and my camera when I went to the hospital. Bag was at least packed and nursery was ready and done. Labor takes awhile. Sometimes I wonder if, in an effort not to be the woman rushing to the hospital, I waited too long, but labor stalled at contractions 4 minutes apart so I was good.

    I know you'll be a great mommy!

  5. I ditto April about the car seat...I kept thinking I had plenty of time to install it & ended up needing my brother to go do it while I was in the hospital.

It's so exciting how close you are to meeting your son!!

  6. Shannon, I'm really impressed w/ how much you ARE prepared. You can't ever be totally prepared b/c, well, having, taking care of and living with kids is a lifelong surprise. :) And as for whether you turn into "that woman." I really don't think you're going to care when the time comes.

I think you're going to be amazing!

  7. I remember I posted on my blog a pic of that first laundry (drying), that excited I was :-))

About the bags, I would also divide bags into one that goes with you in labour and the other for the stay at the hospital after delivary.

  8. Shannon,

Wow, you are SOOOOO close!!! I'm so excited for you!

Only 19 days left on your Chiquitito counter... wow!

Thanks for the Braxton Hicks advice. I called my midwife (rather than worrying about being a bother... yes, i want to be likeable too!) and she said up to 4 BH an hour is okay. Phew! I am very excited for long walks over spring break in CA.

While I totally "get" the fears about Something Bad happening, or about the terrible headaches... I would try to let go of the fears about being One of Those Women. First of all, your job is to get you and Chiquitito safely across the finish line, not to earn the Most Favorite Patient Ever Award (let's face it: you are going to be a lot of work for your nurse regardless of how amiable you are... that's the nature of OB!). And second of all, focusing on your manners might hold you back from going to that place where you let go of all resistance to labor... which could stall or slow things down. You don't want that. So let your body be the boss. You are not a Pain in the Butt in your normal life -- I doubt you will be in labor. And if you are... that will be FINE. They are used to screaming, crying, cursing, pooping, peeing, and lengthy birth plans in OB... you are not going to set any records for being difficult. Promise! Focus on you, not the opinions of others.

Ok, sorry, I will get off my soap box. You are going to be AMAZING. I can't wait to hear more of your story!!!! You are an inspiration.

    Best,

    Abby

  9. I think it is awesome how open you are, and your fears are so normal and so relatable! I had all the same fears as you. I was actually happy while in early labor because I was so excited to be in labor and my midwife was so great....but in transition I was weepy and frustrated and throwing up and not very nice. But it passed and then I couldn't think about anything else at all while pushing, was just perfectly quiet. You're going to be so great!!!! Thinking of you!
