As I watched these women, I couldn't help but think that they'd certainly never dealt with IF - after the 4th or 5th cycle of POAS, the novelty wears off and women aren't set up with a video camera to record what is anticipated to be another BFN. And there's absolutely no way they could have possibly experienced a pregnancy loss before, because their reactions to their BFPs were much to innocent and joyful. I have to admit, I was a little bit jealous of the "Womb TV" women in all their blissful ignorance. And then a little disappointed when I realized that this was the full extent of Today's coverage of pregnant women sharing too much online. Because I really do have a TMI post here, and I had thought was a wonderful segue it would be into my post today, instead of an aside before I get started.
*warning: this is where the TMI stuff comes in*
Yesterday morning, as I was getting into the shower, I noticed something weird on my nipple. And when I brushed it off, I realized that with just the tiniest bit of squeezing, there's actually liquid coming out of my nipples. And that weird something was actually some of that dried liquid. It's a clear liquid, but it's there. All the strange sensations I've been feeling in my breasts lately must really mean something is going on in there, and now my boobs are leaking. I guess I should get used to it.
Last night, I finally remembered my plans to work on perineal massage. I first heard about it from new mommy Oak, back when she was still pregnant and posted about it after a Hypnobabies class. I did some research, and it turns out that massaging your hoo-hoo, when done properly, really does decrease the chance of tearing during delivery. Read two very difficult to follow instructions here - that second one that is supposed to clarify things is a doozy; or read some very simple instructions here. (Yes, I know it says to start this 6 weeks before delivery - I really meant to, but I was out of olive oil.)
It sounds easy enough, right? Well, last night I discovered that I can't reach my hoo-hoo with my thumbs. At least not both thumbs at the same time. I can still bend over and touch my toes without bending my knees and I can still tie my own shoes, but I can not put both thumbs in my hoo-hoo at the same time. It's a physical impossibility. I'm so shocked - it never occurred to me that I might not be able to follow the instructions once I finally got around to trying.
Not only that, but even with one thumb pressing down as instructed, it hurts, even when I was barely using any pressure. When I first tried it I thought, "Ouch!" and then I thought "Motherfucker!" (ok, so maybe I said that out loud. It's not like Chiquitito hasn't heard it before. And maybe ouch wasn't really my first thought.) For a minute there I was seriously doubting my ability to make it through natural childbirth. But then the pain eased up, and while I know I wasn't doing it exactly right, I could feel everything relax a little, and it was just a little stretching and not actually painful. I know that tiny amount of pain is nothing compared to childbirth, but the fact that I'm willing to do it again tonight tells me that I might just make it. Especially when I know there's the reward of a heathy baby ahead. And no olive oil is involved.
(As an aside, even if I had a partner to help me with this, I'm not sure I would let him. Things are definitely looking weird down there. Yes I looked. It felt so different, how could I not get out a mirror and check things out?)
I have no idea if a couple of weeks of doing this is going to be enough to actually help, but it's worth trying. Unless of course I throw my back out while trying to get my hoo-hoo massaged properly. Which is a distinct possibility.

Shannon, you are cracking me up! These people have never seen TMI like we've all seen TMI! I hope the massage helps. :)
ReplyDeleteI've heard of the massage, but never thought of the logistics of it. Ehhh- that's not TMI- when you start really discussion bathroom problems, that might be tmi. :-)
ReplyDeleteHilarious!! It's so nice that you're 10 days ahead of me...it prepares me for what's to come!
ReplyDeleteAs for the massage...it helps to use an 'apparatus' to do the stretching. I couldn't imagine reaching down there at this point, but with a 'tool' it works quite well.
TMI??
Hmm - all these things I know nothing about! Wow - thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThis isn't TMI at all! I need to know these things in case I get pregnant. Thanks for sharing. :)
ReplyDelete(I'd also heard that a...erm...device can be helpful in preparing the perineum. Might be worth looking into!)
I don't think its TMI. I find this stuff very interesting. It put a smile on my face too. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteBahahahah! Just FYI I pretty much gave up after my second attempt at the taint massage. Apparently there's a 50/50 split on whether or not it was effective and I just decided to go with the other 50 since I too thought it hurt and just was too lazy to do it.
ReplyDeletelove this post. never heard about the benefits of massaging the hoo-hoo during pregancy. noting that to myself for future reference.
ReplyDeleteI'm really not sure how to respond to this post. I think I'm blushing! But I will say this, a friend of mine had the message and she said it hurt but only a day after the 2nd one she was in labor 2 weeks early. Be prepare while you are "rubbing around" down there! :)
ReplyDeleteShe had the massage...not the message!!
ReplyDeleteConfession - during my first IVF, I had my camera in the bathroom so I would be ready to tape it as soon as I got my BFN.
ReplyDeleteYou're right - those woman have definitely never been through IF or loss. Because after about the 5th day of BFN's, I was ready to thrown that camera away. Now, if I ever had that miracle of a BFP, taping it would be the LAST thing I would think of!
I was going to try the perineal massage, but I asked my OB about it and she said that it increases problems with incontinence (sp), so I abandonned the idea.
ReplyDeleteYou're so right about those women on Today--they have no idea what it's like to deal with fertility issues.
I get a little annoyed about people (I mean really, who is the Today Show to say what's TMI) dictating what should be shared and what should be kept hush-hush. This is how misinformation and ignorance are born. I love it when people post information and their experiences even if it might be deemed TMI. I'd rather have the info than not, and often times it's stuff I never thought about and a light bulb will go off. The more info I can get about things, the better!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing!
I love this post!
ReplyDeleteI saw the same special and share your thoughts. These women know nothing about TMI because they know nothing about IF.
And be careful reaching down there. The last thing you want is Chiquitito surfing out on a wave of EVOO. :)
My midwife definitely recommended doing that too, and did it throughout my labor, which definitely helped! I was too scared to try it myself!!! So good for you!
ReplyDeleteI appreciate TMI posts like this one...some of this stuff I have never heard of! Thanks for the enlightenment. I hope to consider that predicament one day. I also saw some of that special and felt no connection whatsoever. It was like looking through a blurry window and trying to read the lips of someone speaking Russian. I got the gist of what was going on but knew it related in no way to my experience.
ReplyDelete14 days to go!! How exciting!
Shannon, I'm sure you've already done this - and heck, you have a lot more important things on your mind right now! - but I've nominated you for the Versatile Blogger award. In the off-chance you haven't already done it and have time for it, go grab your "prize" off my blog.
ReplyDeleteI hope you're taking it easy as much as possible!
