Home Envy

Finn with his favorite toy
This post is about something so ridiculous, I'm almost embarrassed to even write it.  You see, I have horrible house envy.  As many other things as I have going on right now, and with all the difficulties that others are facing, I feel silly being this bothered by my house, but I just can't help myself.

I live in the most adorable neighborhood.  Cute little houses, most with even cuter gardens and front porches.  People here decorate their houses for every holiday, including the 4th of July.  Not just a flag, but full on decorating (one house even had red, white and blue twinkle lights).  My house is a rental, and it looks like it.  The guy who owns it mows the lawn, but only every other week, so half the time it looks ragged.  I have a small little plot of flowers in the back, but that's right next to the plastic pool and water table, which are much loved by Finn, but not so pretty to look at.  I'm the only house on the block with no garage, and I'm right on the corner, so the plastic stuff is hard to miss.  My potted plants are all dead or dying because I can't remember to water them every day and my front porch is just about empty, except for a few of those dying plants and a couple of small lawn ornaments.  I walk by the other houses in my neighborhood and wish that my house was more like them.

Classy, right?
I like the inside of my house, but it is not what I would ever choose if I were buying a house.  It's small, with an open floor plan - you can see straight from the back door to the front door (shotgun style?) The kitchen is huge - there's actually a lot of wasted space with the way it's laid out, but that gives Finn plenty of space to play.  The kitchen table that I love is way too big for the dining room, my furniture doesn't fit quite right in my living room, and the carpet is just a little worn (and it's not hardwood floors).  All the rooms upstairs are small, my bathroom is downright tiny, and I traded in my custom built closets for wire racks...but I have a wonderful front porch off my bedroom.

It doesn't feel like home.  My condo was not right for me and Finn at all, but it felt like home. Not because I'd lived there so long, but because I had made it into a place I loved to be.  I'm having a hard time doing that here, mainly because because of time and money, but also because I am so frustrated knowing that if I could sell my condo, I could buy any one of the homes in this neighborhood and live in a house that I truly loved.

It's ridiculous, I know.  The market sucks, and I'm lucky that I'm still able to pay my mortgage.  Besides, I've only been here since March. While I want to have everything perfect right now, that's just not going to happen. Over the next few months I am going to buy a few more things to organize the mess so it's easier to keep the downstairs neat.  If I could just get motivated, I could get my bedroom completely finished so I could feel cozy and happy in my room, instead of surrounded by clutter.  I would love to buy all new furniture for Finn's room, since what I have was bought for the tiny room I had in the condo, instead of the slightly larger, but much brighter and airier feeling room he has now.  Instead, I'm going to try to find a new bookshelf for his room now, and be happy with that.

While I'd also love to buy a cute set of seats and table for the back, and wooden rocking chairs for the front, I can't afford to do that, either.  I'll keep my eyes out for sales this fall, and maybe I'll luck out with something I can use next year.  Next spring, I think I'm going to plant some hydrangeas in the back to add more color, and to do more to block the ugly air conditioning unit.

I need to get myself to stop wishing for the home that I just can't have right now, and work on making this house into a place that feels like home for me and Finn. We're going to be here a while, so what's really silly is letting myself get so caught up in home envy that I don't do anything to make it better.  And let it bother me so much I waste time writing a blog post about it instead of actually working on the projects I'm in the middle of right now.

  1. It's not silly to post about this. It's good to get it out and let it go. I also drive by houses that I can no longer afford because I spent so much money on infertility and it bothers me a bit.

You know, when you finally do move out of that house you'll miss it for all the good memories it'll have.

  2. As someone who has always rented I get that it doesn't feel like home, especially since you're still relatively new there. We tend to buy our furniture to fit the space we have and then when we move it into a new place it doesn't seem to fit and just makes it feel "off.". When I decided to have Annelise I became obsessed with trying to buy a house so that I could personalize it and make it ours. I wasn't in a place financially to buy so I was so thankful when I found the house I'm currently renting. It had never been a rental before so it didn't have that "rental" look. Each room is painted a different color instead of white or beige and the yard has flower gardens. I also got rid of my old furniture (too pet destroyed) and have slowly getting new pieces that fit this space. Maybe you can see about painting the walls and adding your own touches to make it feel like home. I like Evelyn mentioned as you start to develop memories in that space it will start to feel more like home.

  3. House envy is completely and totally normal. I love my house (have been in it for 13 years now) but would love to pick it up and move it closer to work (assuming I could even afford land nearer work). Give it time and check out not only sales but Craigs.list, etc. I found my deck table there for a steal. Do little things which add to the cozy factor- the new bookshelf, organizing your bedroom, etc. It will all come together. :-)

  4. I just killed all my potted plants, too. Lesson learned. If it's not on a timer, it will die. I also get house envy - and I own my house. I like my house, but there's a lot about it that I do not like. I visit friends' big, beautiful homes and manicured yards and start to compare in my head. But then I quickly make myself stop, and focus on the good apects(tiny house is easy to clean and cheap to heat; nice part of town; nice neighbors; etc).

You surely shouldn't worry about the plastic pool and water table (we have those too)! I bet your neighbors are thrilled that you and Finn are the renters next door.

  5. You're a mom with a baby. A single, working mom. You have every right to have house envy because who has time with all of that going on to do house projects. Moose is 3 and I finally started gardening again.

  6. I feel the same way! I just bought my childhood home, a lakefront cottage, and I'm so happy I own it, but the projects to get it "up to snuff" with the rest of the neighborhood overwhelm me! It's old, it needs updates to everything, and flowers cost money! This month I'm getting bigger, new windows and insulation and decorative shutters. I think the shutters will help a lot. I also have "boat and dock envy". My pontoon is really old and one of the only boats on the lake with a gas motor, and my dock is one of the shortest! So much to do!

  7. I think we all have house envy, no matter what we have or don't have. Instead let's think of how happy you are to have little Finn, I'm sure there is more than one person in your neighborhood that sees you playing with him outside, and thinks... gosh, I wish I had a little guy to do things like that with. :)

  8. yeah, i think we do all have this. i know i surely do! and i don't think there's anything wrong with feeling that way! beating yourself up about it doesn't help.

it's hard to live in a culture that values the appearance of our homes so much. the OUTWARD appearance, that is.

if people could see how full-to-bursting your house is with LOVE, everyone would want to live there!

  9. I understand ya! I was just happy that my lawn was so covered by the big trees in both the front and back yard that it I never watered it and it was the most green on the street (of people who always watered). But ugh the mowing and weeding and. . .truly something I do NOT miss since I moved. Glad my mom likes that kind of thing, cause she has this whole place professionally landscaped, and no way will I take care of it ;)
I love the water table and pool, but understand what you mean :) I like these posts, it keeps your blog real ;)

  10. I always have home envy especially since I am living with my folks. It is so hard to rent because it really isn't yours. I think you are being really hard on yourself about the exterior of your house, you have your priorities right Finn and work. I can't imagine you have much extra time right now to garden. If so, it's relaxing. If not, one week without rain is killer. Hope you find that home feeling you desire. Soon enough you will find that perfect home. The market has to turn around sometime.

  11. My life is about home envy, which is probably why I move so damn much. Hopefully the market will turn around and you will be able to get the house you can make a home. My new house will be a "shotgun" style home, which is what I loved about it. Mind you, when I actually live in in, I may not feel the same way.

  12. I have neighborhood envy. Love my house, decorations at holidays, but loathe where it's located. I don't blame you at all and hopefully it will be better in months to come.

  14. J has the same little water table!
I have house envy. I spend a lot of time on house blogs and pinterest which don't help at all. My mom used to say, it is what you make it but I would take it if someone gave me a new house.
