Two Years

Two years ago today I went in for a D&C after my first pregnancy ended at 9 weeks.  I'm still sad about it, but in a wistful sort of way, not the same deep hurt I felt when it happened.  My life is too full with the wonderful little boy that is Finn to feel anything more than that.  I feel so lucky - and much more sad for my friends who also have experience miscarriages, but are still waiting for their babies.

I've been so consumed with weaning Finn that I haven't given much more than a passing thought to the actual process of TTC #2 until today, when the date made me pause.  I stopped and remembered the anxiety and hassle and worry and heartbreak that goes along with TTC.  It is all so worth it, but I'm really not looking forward to it.  Not one bit.

I did sit down and think about what's going to happen in the next few months.  I am supposed to call after my first "normal" period after weaning Finn.  Since I haven't had a period since July 2010, I'm not going to consider my first period normal, even if it happens after he's fully weaned and seems like a normal period.  I'd like to have several cycles for my supplements to have time to work before I actually start TTC.  So once I get that first normal period, I'm supposed to go in for my Day 3 labs and ultrasound, and schedule my HSG.  As long as there are no big surprises with all those tests, my next cycle after that will be the one that I start meds for an IUI.  Thinking about timing, that means that if I get a period very very soon, I could conceivably start TTC in August.  But realistically speaking, it's more likely to be September.

I'm glad I thought about this tonight.  Realizing that weaning within the month puts me at September at the earliest to start to TTC (and that's if all goes the way it's supposed to) has me a lot more motivated.  I don't want it to be winter before I start trying!

When I first started down the path to motherhood I said, "I'm never going to do IVF, I'll stop if it comes to that."  That changed - the IUI that stuck was going to be my last; I was prepared to go to IVF next if it didn't work.  What changed my mind was reading blogs, and hearing other women's stories and realize that while IVF isn't fun, it was something I could do.  Now I'm prepared to do 2 IUIs and then go to IVF (or just one IUI, if I have a poor response to stims this time around).  And I'm also prepared to go the DE route if IVF fails, too.  I don't know how many IVF cycles I'd be willing to try - I don't think it's possible to say for sure until I'm there.  But I do know that if I decide I'm done trying with my own eggs, I'll wait a couple of years to save up money and then try with DE.

I never would have thought I'd even consider that route.  It's amazing how time changes your perspective, isn't it?

I still haven't bought more vials of sperm.  I have two in storage with my RE, and I keep meaning to order more, but I have to call and speak with someone directly (my donor is sold out to new families) and I just never do it.  I'm going to make myself a reminder right now to do that on Tuesday.  If I do end up doing DE, it would be so nice if that child and Finn could still be half-(biological) sibs.

  1. I'm glad to hear how Finn mediates the sorrow from your miscarriage two years ago. "My life is too full with the wonderful little boy that is Finn" - beautiful.

Trying for two, wow. Yes, it is interesting how plans and limits change along the way. I hope you find success before IVF and donor egg, but I can see how that would be nice to have a half sibling for Finn too.

  3. Wow- two years- I "met" you online/ blogging shortly after that loss. I am so glad that you have Finn and that he is doing so well. I've glad that he has helped you heal.

I understand what you mean about how our "lines in the sand" move. I was only going to do six IUI's and move on. Now I in the process of my donor embryo FET (18 days). I did not see this coming. Good luck as you try for number two. :-)

  4. Wow two years...it's a dull pain that never quite goes away, does it. I shamefully admit I'm a little jealous reading about you T42. I hope everything goes smoothly though. & with the weaning, I hope Finn transitions easily. I really liked your wording: my life is too full...it's a perfect way to describe it.

  5. Shannon, this is good to read. I'm sure I've posted similar things. LG was conceived on an unmedicated IUI (it was a fluke; I'd done injectables already and was moving on to IVF the next cycle) and Tiny Boy, as you know, required DE. I have NO regrets, but if I'd done one thing differently I would have saved one vial of LG's donor for IVF/DE. I just really never saw that coming (I went through 7 IUI vials and maybe 20 IVF vials [used them combined for IUIs] and had already moved on to several other donors by the time DE rolled around...but, really, how could I have anticipated doing 22 cycles?!).

    Keep us posted!

  6. Also, obviously your RE will help you decide this...but if you do have a poor response to stims, moving to IVF probably isn't going to do much for you, as a "good" IVF is usually (not always, of course) dependent on having many embryos. If you're not getting that, IUIs are much cheaper and have pretty much the same rate of success (at your age--my RE gave me this line even in my mid-to-late 30s). DE is expensive but there's really no comparing it in terms of success rate (i.e. I was given at best a 30% chance of success with IVF (probably as low as 15) vs. 70-80% with one cycle of DE).

  7. I know what you mean about the lines in the sand changing. With J, I was going to stop after IUI's with injectables and move toward adoption. I didn't want to do IVF at all. But the process seems less scary now, and now that I have one biological child, I feel like I'd go through more to have a second one. Let's hope it doesn't take that long, though (for either of us).

  8. You're so right about time changing your perspective. Circumstance does too.

Last year about this time when I realized I would never concieve with my own eggs I was heartbroken. It's still there a tiny bit but I realized a few months later that I really wanted to have a baby.

I hadn't given much thought to what I would do because I never figured it wouldn't work, actually I never figured I'd have to do IVF. I'm actaully glad I started reading blogs because I realized some things really aren't that big a stretch.

  9. Hi Shannon! So glad you stumbled onto my blog - I love connecting with other SMCs. Finn is completely adorable! Good luck on TTC #2.

IVF isn't so bad. Honestly, if I had it to do all over again, I would skip the IUIs and jump right to IVF.

  10. Can't wait to hear more as you continue the journey. I'm very curious to hear what the emotional aspect of T42 is like. I just CANNOT imagine undergoing the emotional intensity of pregnancy and childbirth again! Not to say I won't do it... but I'm clearly not ready yet. TTC'ing isn't as intimidating, for whatever reason. But the idea of the fatigue of pregnancy with caring for a child who is already here... wow!

  12. Good luck as you start the process of getting ready to TTC #2! I can't even fathom being there, due to still being pregnant with #1... but hey, you never know, someday I may get there! I hope you have a quick, easy TTC journey this time around...
