Vader looks fierce, but is actually quite timid - and of course he still needs time to fully adjust to his new home and his new life. While I knew the adjustment period would be hardest, I still didn't quite expect it to be much of a challenge, and so I'm trying to readjust my expectations of the next month. He is very good with the boys, and very patient with their initial nervousness around him, but now that they aren't nervous anymore, he's the nervous one as he has to get used to the sheer volume of noise the two of them can create (it is amazing how much noisier my house is with two boys instead of one - I swear the noise level has quadrupled, not just doubled). I can tell he's going to settle in eventually, though. Last night we were playing "Kissing Monster" and Vader joined in the fun, with wagging tail and lots of licks for the Kissing Victim.
Then there was the night this weekend when he got away from me after being scared by fireworks our neighbor set off and was gone for 3 hours. That was drama I did not anticipate as the rescue group and some neighbors came out at 9 pm to help me look for him while the kids slept. It was sometime after 11pm when I was sitting out on the front porch, wondering what I was going to tell the boys, when he came walking up to the house, all on his own. So clearly he now knows where home is - and so I guess we're stuck with him. And him with us.
Right now - this time in my life - feels like the start of a new chapter. It's not just the dog, though Ifee like he's the start of it all. I've been making some changes over the past few weeks and I'm feeling really good about them. I think I'm just about ready to share what I'm doing, but still figuring out how to put it all down in words. In the meantime, I'm going to get to bed at my actual bedtime tonight, because someone is going to be waking me up for our morning walk at 6am, and it's hard to say no to that sweet face of his.

Awwww, congrats on getting a dog! He looks so cute with the boys! I'm glad he found his way home after the firework incident. Also, was he, perchance, named after Darth Vader? :D
ReplyDeleteHe looks like an awesome dog. I would definitely cross to the other side of the street if I saw you guys out walking! Although you were scared when he ran away - just remember it was probably a huge exciting adventure for him - and he chose to come back to you. When I first got my puppy I was convinced it was like having a newborn child - every time he rang his bell he got to be taken out for a walk - he had me twisted round the tip of his finger. Soon you will all be adjusted to each other and it will be much easier!
ReplyDeleteCongrats! My sister got a puppy this summer. Her child is 10 so her household was relatively calm. The puppy is a puppy. She was not prepared for any of it - the accidents, the barking, the neediness. They ran out to buy baby gates, a thunder shirt, and booked him in doggy kindergarten. After a month, they are a close-knit group and it's like he's always been there and can even stay for the most part when asked (his butt will still wriggle, but he tries to please). It sounds like Vader knows he's as lucky as you are and is ready to settle in. Congrats!
ReplyDeleteGreat news. Soon you won't be able to remember what life was like without him!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the new family member! He looks adorable!! Elsie is trying to convince me to get a new kitten or a puppy. I think another living being in my apartment would kill the current cat so she has to wait. But I don't dare to tell her that for fear she will knock off the cat. :)
ReplyDeleteCongratulations!! I've always thought it fun for little boys to grow up with a dog :)
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the new addition! I like big black dogs :-). I am waiting for the day we could have a dog (currently where we live the owner doesn't allow pets)
ReplyDeleteSidekick loves our dog so much!!! She's almost 13, so I fear for the day when she is no longer with us. Sidekick walks her with me, feeds her, gives her her meds, snuggles with her, and loves her so much. Your boys will love having Vader around! There's something so great about growing up with a dog.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! I really want a dog but know I'm not quite ready for the commitment yet.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations - he is adorable!
