Before having a child, I had idyllic visions of what life with a child would be, and the type of parent I would be. It's humbling to realize that I'm just not capable of being that fabulous mom I dreamed of - not all the time. And really, no one is - it's actually just a little ridiculous to expect myself to be able to live up to that idealized version of me. All I can do is try.
To that end, I'm going to continue to work on getting good sleep. And the title of the book that Abby mentioned, Playful Parenting, got me thinking. I usually have a good sense of humor in dealing with Finn when he's being a terror, but over the past few months I've lost that just about completely. So I've been working on it. (And Abby, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the book if you do get the chance to read it!)
My first attempt at restoring humor was unexpected. Last week Finn woke up when I did, and when I started to get out of bed he got upset. "Don't get up, Mommy!" While it's sweet he wanted me to stay in bed, I could tell from the sound of his voice that it was the beginning of a horrible morning, because of course I had to get up. He was going to get really upset and the rest of the morning was just going to get worse. And then I had a thought. "I don't want to get up, but I have to poop. If I don't go to the bathroom now, I'm going to poop in the bed." It took a minute for that to sink in, and then he said with a sound of pure horror in his voice, "Get up, Mommy! Go potty! Don't poopy in the bed!" And a few minutes later, he joined me in the bathroom, grinning from ear to ear, "Mommy didn't poopy in the bed! Yay!" And just like that, the tide turned and our morning was smooth and easy.
There are still a lot of meltdowns and tantrums and typical 2 year old behavior, but with sleep and humor (and a more realistic idea in my mind of what kind of mom I can be), it's a little easier. Now I need to bookmark this post and come back to it the next time I feel like I'm at my wit's end.
This weekend, in between my marathon paperwork sessions, I made some time for Finn and I to go out together with no time line or agenda. On Saturday we spent 2 hours at a local plantation, which is pretty small but has pigs, chickens, sheep, goats, a cow and a horse. Finn talked to the chickens, oinked at the pigs, looked at the other animals and ran and played. I let him guide where we went and how long we stayed, even though that meant covering the same ground over and over again. It was so nice to have that unrushed time with him, and we both really enjoyed it.
We had more tasks to get done on Sunday, but after his nap we went for a walk. I was hoping to get a few pictures by the tree I'd taken his Halloween pictures at last year, but he realized we were heading towards the playground, and that's all he could focus on. So we spent some time at the playground, and then I managed to get a few pictures of him in the afternoon sun. I didn't get the pictures I was hoping for, but I did get a few cute shots, and again, we had a lovely afternoon.

Several commenters also mentioned the recent mom and kid video that's been floating around Facebook, and someone sent it to me - it truly is wonderful. If you haven't seen it, watch it now. You'll be glad you did.
A New Perspective For Moms

That's the Shannon humor I know and love. Also, I can't wait for the subsequent pre-school blog entry, "Finn's teacher called me today and asked if I suffered from incontinence..."
ReplyDeleteWhere's the "like' button for the comment above?! Too funny! I've felt the same amazement when just one silly remark on my part does wonders to defuse an angry start to the day. I remember the two's as being definitely more challenging than three, but others have said that they found threes more challenging. I think it depends on the kid! Hang in there, and I myself need to remember that good sleep can make all the difference in the world. Finn is such a cutie pie!! I can't wait to see pics of him with the new baby!!
ReplyDeleteI like your humour approach a lot. Lately when SR is playing she doesn't want to stop for a pee or bath. I tried timers and logic. Today I picked her up and pretended to put her in with her clothes on. She found this wildly funny and decided to take her bath.
ReplyDeleteYou are awesome (and I so relate to your feelings!).
ReplyDeleteI need to remember to lighten up. My kiddos are beginning to understand that the word silly goes with something you laugh at (I discovered this at dinner tonight), so maybe humor will help get through the rough patches.
Great post, and the importance of keeping a sense of humor is so true! Sometimes, I feel like I'm being too crabby also. When that happens, I decide to become a monster (think t-rex arms, hunched over, robotic movements, and funny growling voice) and chase after Isaac saying "I'm going to get you, you better run or you will be tickled!" Isaac thinks it is hilarious, and I find that a little laughter is all we both need to turn the crabbiness around.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you had a wonderful day together. I can't believe how big Finn looks in the pictures!
I'm glad you're feeling better. It's always nice to have more "tools" in your toolbox. :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad things are going a little better and that you and Finn had such a lovely weekend together. (Love the photos!)
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing that video.
Oh he is just so cute!!!! Glad you had some sweet moments together :) I'll be hoping for continued chances to rest and interject good humor into parenting (I hope the same for myself--it truly truly is not easy!)
ReplyDeleteI have seen that video so many times, but this is the first time I actually watched it - sobbing! And I am totally going to file that poop thing away to use one day! ;)
ReplyDeleteSo glad you've come to this place. I got here almost a year ago & you'll be interested to know that it was a comment from YOU on my blog that got me to reevaluate the mother I thought I should be with the mother I was & could be. Hang in & keep that sense of humour!!
ReplyDeleteI needed your story! Thanks for sharing it. I feel like there are so many posts that I need to bookmark and return to as my boys get older. You are paving the way! Kudos for all you do to make a great life for Finn.
ReplyDeleteI was just thinking today about how motherhood is so different from what I imagined. Sometimes it IS all sunshiney and lovely-looking, but certainly not always! It is much more often tired/messy/fussy/happy/stressed/grumpy/thankful. At least at my house. :) Loved the video. Really, really touching to see the kids' perspectives. No doubt Finn knows how amazing his mom is! Beautiful pics of your little man, as always. I'm super jealous of your fall colors...
ReplyDeleteThis NY Times OpEd by Charles M Blow made me think of you. It's not about humor, but it's specific to single parenting and has some lovely life-affirming advice from his Mom. My favorite parts:
ReplyDelete"She taught me that parenting was a lot like giving a hug: It’s all about love and pressure and there is no one way to do it.
She taught me that sometimes you have to make time for yourself so that you will have energy to give to your children. Allow them to have a pizza night every now and then. An occasional treat won’t hurt them, but working yourself to a frazzle will surely hurt you. Rest.
She taught me that you must allow yourself time to find stillness and so you can be moved by it. Sometimes we are so busy that we forget why we’re busy. We have so many things on our list of priorities that we lose sight of what’s really important."

Just catching up - I'm so sorry to hear about your grandmother passing away. It's never easy but I'm glad that you have some great memories to remind you of her.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm sorry you've been over-tired lately and had to deal with a sometimes-cranky two year old. That was some great work you did diffusing what could have been a morning meltdown!
Also, I'm glad you've been able to find some free time for you and Finn to just be together enjoying different activities!
OMG that poop-in-the-bed story had me on the floor! So funny! I love the idea of using humor, and I'm going to try to do that.
ReplyDeleteIt's humbling to realize that I'm just not capable of being that fabulous mom I dreamed of - not all the time. UGH--I could have written that sentence every day for the past 2 or 3 years. I never share those thoughts with anyone. I'm humbled by your courage and your generosity of spirit.
ReplyDeleteGlad it is going better!! I too have to remember my sense of humor when dealing with Elsie. It is amazing how it can derail the temper tantrum and distract her. I often do it walking home when she insists on being carried. I ask her to skip or walk like a penguin etc. Of course, I have to do it too so we often get amused looks from the others on the sidewalk!
