HSG Report

Finn and I had the best morning today.  It was so nice getting up with plenty of time to cuddle in the bed and be silly and no rush to be anywhere.  Our morning was wonderfully slow and simple - I sang "If You're Happy and You Know It" once and then ended up repeating it another 15 times, with Finn chiming in with the clapping and ear wiggling, but he couldn't quite figure out the feet stomping.  Breakfast was a messy experience with Finn using his spoon to feed himself, and when that wasn't enough, he licked the bowl.  Who knew yogurt could be that good?

Too soon it was time for me to head off for my HSG.  I checked in, changed into a lovely hospital gown and socks for my cold toes, and right on time was walking into the radiology suite.

The wonderful x-ray tech caught me taking a picture of the room, and offered to take a picture of me on the table right before the HSG.

Last time my HSG was awful - he couldn't get the catheter through my cervix, and ended up having to use a balloon catheter to get in through.  This time the only bad part was getting the (ginormous) speculum in place. That was awful.  But once it was in the right spot it wasn't that bad. The catheter went right in, and suddenly I was getting that lovely cramping from the dye.  The screen was right at my eye level, so I got to watch the whole thing.  It was normal - as expected - and much less uncomfortable than last time.

I asked my RE about my FSH, and my thoughts of only trying one IUI before going to IVF, and his response surprised me.  He told me that my FSH wasn't unexpected (true), but the numbers don't tell the whole story, and my history of a successful IUI (twice) with the meds we're planning on using made him think it was still worth trying two IUIs, at least.  To paraphrase him, "with your labs, age and prior history, I don't know that IVF would necessarily increase your chances enough to make it worth not at least trying the easier and cheaper method a few times, first."  He did say that he hadn't seen my AMH results yet, but wasn't sure the results would change his recommendation much at all.

His reasoning makes complete sense, so I think I'm going to go back to our original plan.  Am I crazy?

  1. I would go that route for sure, based on your history. But then again the thought of IVF scares the bejesus out of me, so I might not be the most reliable source!

  2. Are you crazy? Sometimes, but it's what makes you so nice...er fun. ;) the other stuff is Greek to me, but go the easy route first sounds good.

  3. I agree, why rush into IVF if you most likely don't need to go that route. I'm excited about the prospect of Finn being a big brother, something tells me he will be a great one!

  4. Love that pic of Finn with his bowl. It's like he's saying "more porridge, please!"

The doctor's reasoning sounds very rational to me!

  5. Not crazy at all. The plan should change as the information changes or is interpreted. I'll bet you're glad that step is over.

  6. I love good news posts. Doesn't sound crazy to me either.

  7. No, not crazy.

And actually Dr. Gorgeous told me that IVF did not give me a statistical edge over IUI for pretty much the same reasons.

  8. What a fun morning, if I gave Foxie a bowl he would fling it across the room. Good boy Finn such a cutie! I am glad the HSG went much better and the results are good. Sounds like a good plan!

  11. That's exactly what my RE told me after 5 (I think?) IUIs. IVF wouldn't necessarily increase my odd, just cost more. And that was before a pregnancy which I had my next 3 cycles with the last one resulting in the two crazy boys running around my kitchen right now. Good luck!! :)

  12. Great news and he sounds like a doc who is trying to make the best choice for you - rather than his wallet!

  13. When I first started with my RE, I doubted many things he said because there was no trust. We now have a very trusting relationship and when he tells me what he thinks we should do, and I counter with my thoughts, we usually do his plan or meet in the middle. You countered with your thoughts, he then explained his, and you sound comfortable with it. Not crazy at all :)

  14. So funny how different REs do things differently. For my SHG (which is a similar test but using saline instead of dye) I just had to remove my bottoms and cover with a sheet...the only time I have ever needed to gown up was for my egg retrieval and embryo transfers.

It's great that your RE is thinking of the best course of action for you. Sounds like a good plan. Glad the test was fine.

  17. Glad you and Finn had a nice morning and that the test was easier this time. I had an HSG and it was like your first experience they couldn't get the catheter through after three tries and was doing the balloon thing. It was so uncomfortable and the surface so hard. Then came the cramping, I came very close to fainting. Funny enough, when I declared I was going to faint, everyone moved a lot quicker and it was done, lol.
